Skipper and Amber Concept Art by Kelaiah Skipper and Amber Concept Art by Kelaiah
Here finally is some concept art of the two battle-geniuses who kept Tsarmina chasing her own tail while Martin was off battling toads and Gonff was dancing with crabs. ;) :XD:

First off, I already realize they still need TONS of work:

I don't like how Skipper's face came out, so be sure I'm going to work on it, but I am glad at how his body came out, because it does look ottery to me (though I might make him a bit more brawny and barrel-chested in the future). As for his tunic, I based it off the pic of him in the Redwall Tribe of Otters: [link] If you have any suggestions on this, please come out and say so. :)

As for Amber, I don't like how she looks much, either. I think her head is a little too masculine (though I think I might keep that style for another squirrel), and her fur looks a bit too red. But I do like her tunic, its partially based on the picture of her in the actual book where she's about to shoot Fortunata. For Amber's final look, I think I'll base her more like 1-Renaissance's version: [link]

Now something I wanted to make mention of Skipper and Amber's tunics: both are gold-trimmed. The reason I had that was because they're both tribal leaders, and I figured that could be to show their rank. Though I suppose one could say that wouldn't help with camoflouge; maybe its just golden-yellow? What do you all think?

Didn't Lady Amber lose an ear among other things in the Kotir Wars?

You're right Lady Amber does look a little masculine...maybe fixing the head shape would help?

As for Skipper, I have no critiques. Their tunic colors are a little too bright, though.

Nice job, Skip looks awesome. Amber looks too vicious, but as you said, this isn't done. About the gold trim, I have to admit it's too much. I'd think they'd wear more muted colours, and as someone else said, wouldn't bother with showing rank.

Yeah I already decided that the trim wouldn't be golden, but rather a golden-yellow. But a lot of people have been saying they wouldn't show rank, so I'll have to give this some thought. :)

I really like Amber's expression. Makes her look like the tough, no-nonsense, determined squirrel that she is.

Well done with Skipper, too. Looks like an otter to me! Though he could do with some whiskers, seeing that he's an otter.

Overall...awesome!!!!

Blue is always a good color for an otter. :)

To make him look more ottery, I would ask whiskers and play around with the eyebrows- I think a rather thin line for the eyebrows could work well, like Nelvana did it with Keyla. It may end up too soft-looking, though...

As for Amber, she looks pretty mean XD I have little practise with females, but I would alter the eyebrows here again, add some longer eyelashes and lengthen the lower part of her tunic. But that's jus' me thinking loudly!

And about the gold trim- While I love luxurious-looking tunics and the like, and it does look good here, I don't think Goodbeasts would wear anything that would show their higher rank. At least, not gold and jewelry (Buuuut it's been ages since I touched a Redwall book).

If you decide to go with the gold trim, I would reconsider Gonff's trim, which you also made yellow :o Don't hurt me!

I actually was thinking of basing his looks off of the "Mighty Clodd" from Season 1, y'know, the one with the clowns? I thought that otter's face had some nice heavy features. :)

And yeah, she does look pretty mean. And thanks for the added suggestion of lengthinging her tunic hem, I think it might help make it look slightly more skirt-ish.

And actually, I decided to make it so that its not actually gold, just a golden-yellow color. And no, I won't hurt you. :XD:

Thanks for the comment! :)

I had to look up what he looked like, and hmmm...the build looks fitting for Skipper, but that poor Clodd has no otter neck D: Those need to be loooooong~

Good luck with Amber! I'd faint before being able to draw a female fightin' squirrel. :)

I agree that Amber needs to look a little more feminine. Sometimes it's tricky with anthros, if you're not giving them obvious "headfur" or more humanoid figures. I have that trouble a lot.

I actually think its very possible to make a female look feminine without "headfur", because Nelvana (and 1-Renassiance) sure did it (Cornflower, Jess, Constance, Celandine, Tessm, etc). You really just need to give them long eyelashes and finer features.

Do you have anything to say about their tunics or Skipper?

Thanks for commenting, though. :)

May I suggest rounding of her forehead? You might notice how jutted out that looks, while the females without headfur have almost circular heads. Also try thinning her eyebrows. Girls in real life don't have eyebrows that thick! :D

You also suggeted adding eyelashes, yet you yourself haven't done that :D

And, as always, tis great to see your art :D Especially when it is a squirrel! :D :D :D

Actually, I really have seen women with eyebrows that are real thick. Heh, there was this one Mexican artist lady named Frieda who had real thick eyebrows.

Heh, but thanks for pointing that out anyway. :D And yes, I didn't add eyelashes, but I decided not to with *this* drawing because I think I'll save it for another character (don't know which character yet, but oh well). :D

Thanks for your comments! :D

Possible, yes. Then again, I struggle making humans look appropriately masculine or feminine sometimes - I drew Agent Drake's human form once, and he's meant to look sort of androgynous at the best of times, but the only way I could make it clear that he wasn't a woman (well, at least not at the point depicted in the picture - identity-crisis-suffering shapeshifters yay!) was to give him a goatee.

Skipper looks fine, but now you mention it you're also right on gold trim not quite working for forest dwellers. Yellow works, though.

Heh, girls were always easy for me to draw, even when I was little, but drawing guys were a different matter. They always looked weird to me. Still kinda do.

Heh, Drake with a goatee... for some reason that sounds highly cute. :XD:

Okay, thanks for that extra comment. :D So from now on, its not gold, just a goldenish-yellow. :)
