7 Deadly Sins - Greed

Part 3: Greed, represented by the Marlfox brood!

I suppose I could have chosen just Silth or Mokkan for this, but I realized this would be a golden opportunity (no pun intended) to do a 'family portrait' of one of the most dysfunctional families ever to come out of the Mossflower-wood-works (again, no pun intended - not really, anyway, heh heh). That's why I didn't have this up much sooner - I originally planned to upload a pic a day for this series, but I ended up biting a bit more than I could chew and had to take my time. But it was worth it, I think. Overall I'm fairly pleased with how this came out. :)

Now of course, just about all of the Redwall baddies were greedy, but with the Marlfoxes, that kind of trait really seemed to stand out with them, hence why they were chosen.

Since the color yellow is associated with greed, I realized I could color them all wearing gold, which of course would suit the rich setting that Castle Marl had. Besides, the Marlfoxes might have worn brown and green during their travels, but I've no doubt they dressed up when they were at home with Mother. After all, she needed to be surrounded by beautiful things. ;)

Not only is everybeasts' wardrobe supposed to reflect their personalities and status, but also how they died, as represented by the rubies (*spoiler alerts ahead* for anyone who hasn't read "Marlfox" yet):

~Mokkan's cloak has huge neck-folds and he's also wearing a thick gold chain. This represents his status as the presumed leader of his siblings as well as how a former slave's chain ends up wrapped around his neck. (He doesn't have any rubies because I didn't think his look would need them.)

~Silth is *layered* in gold to show just how obsessive she is for having riches and beauty, although her tail is still mostly exposed as an expression of her vanity. Plus, the goblet she's holding is studded with rubies - and its being held in front of Lantur. And we all know how THAT turned out. ^^

~Lantur is decked in rubies galore. This is meant to acknowledge how her death was easily the most violent, getting eaten by a whole bunch of pike. What a way to go. But at least she got her own back when she got to haunt Mokkan in his dreams. :evillaugh:

~Ziral is wearing a choker studded with rubies, a nod towards how she ends up beheaded.

~Gelltor, like Mokkan, doesn't have any rubies, but that's because he died due to a blow to the back of his head.

~Vannan has a single ruby on her necklace. That's meant to represent how she gets speared by Skipper.

~Predak, like Ziral, has a choker with a ruby, but its a single ruby. That's because when Borrakul the otter managed to lock his paws around her neck, she died not because her strangled her to death, but because she fell off the battlements of the abbey (either she was able to wrestle her way free and accidentally jump off the walls... or Borrakul threw her off 0_0). Plus, Predak's not wearing a cloak because when she died, she was the only one of her siblings not wearing one.

~Ascrod, like Predak, isn't wearing a cloak either, but that's more to do with his personality than anything else. Of all his siblings, Ascrod seemed the most unassuming, though of course even he wasn't without his arrogance. And like Vannan, his ruby pendant is meant to represent how an arrow got shot right through him. Also, the reason I have Ascrod kneeling on his mother's lap with Mokkan's paw on his shoulder is due to a headcannon of mine that Ascrod is their favorite. It makes sense with Mokkan, since he doesn't trust vixens and had a very obvious contempt for and rivalry with Gelltor; and Silth, well, its just more fun to imagine Ascrod as her favorite child (plus there was a scene in the book where Ascrod recalled a rhyme that Silth used to recite to her brood when they were cubs; he remembered it word for word).

Oh, that's clever! I love little nods like that. It's one the things that makes the difference between seeing a movie and watching it, reading a book and interpreting it, seeing a work of art and feeling it.
